Hosea 5:2

PRAYER

Hosea 5:2 I will discipline all of them.

PRAYER:

O Lord, discipline me. I don’t mean to say, “O Lord, bring it on.” In fact, I confess that I ask this with some hesitancy. For I know that discipline is painful and unpleasant. To accomplish it you use heartache and hardships. I desire none of these. What I do desire is to remain faithful to you. For I know the devil, the world, and my own sinful flesh seek to lead me astray. When you see me being led astray, when I’m being led down a soul-destroying and destructive path, discipline me. Do all it takes to turn me around that I never fall away from faith, but always remain faithful. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Romans 1:16

PRAYER

Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

PRAYER:

Lord, some days or weeks just start off on the wrong note.  From the start, things don’t seem to go right and they fail to improve as the day wears on.  Thankfully the Gospel doesn’t work that way.  Thankfully the fulfillment of your Gospel promises isn’t based on the kind of day or week I’m having.  Instead the Gospel is always powerful.  It always offers comfort.  It always offers relief.  It always offers peace. It always gives me joy, no matter what.  Always has.  Always will.  May this truth improve the outlook of my day and week no matter what the circumstances are that I’m facing.  In Jesus’ name, amen.

John 13:5

PRAYER

John 13:5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, in pure humility you knelt down on bended knee to wash the feet of the disciples. In pure humility you walked up to Calvary to give your life on the cross. In pure humility you came not to be served, but to serve and to give your life as a ransom so that I might have forgiveness and eternal life. Forgive me for my sinful pride and arrogance. May your humility inspire me to be humble that I love others unconditionally, no matter what others might say to me or about me.  I am your servant, Lord. Help me serve you humbly and faithfully. In your name I pray. Amen.

Proverbs 30:5

PRAYER

Proverbs 30:5  Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

PRAYER:

O Lord, I thank you for this reminder today that your word is flawless.  At a time when it’s hard to know what is fact and what is fiction when I see propaganda on TV; at times when I have my own uncertainties and doubts as a result of things that happen in my life, what a rock-solid truth to come back to – your Word is truth.  It has stood the test of time.  It has withstood the assaults of the devil and others.  It has remained strong and unchanging.  Therefore, as doubts and worries creep into my mind as a result of things I experience in life, lead me back to this truth that your Word is flawless.  Knowing this, lead me to other portions of your Word which put to rest my worries and doubts as I am confident that you are “a shield to those who take refuge in [you].”  Amen.

Haggai 1:13

PRAYER

Haggai 1:13 I am with you,” declares the Lord.

PRAYER:

O Lord, I may feel been abandoned by friends or even family…I may feel like I’m just a number or invisible to others…I may feel disconnected because of the way others treat me…Yet I am never alone. You promise me, “I am with you.”  That’s remarkable, especially considering how my sins once separated me from you.  They no longer do because of Christ.  Now you promise that nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:32).  With this knowledge I face today with renewed optimism, peace, and joy no matter what the day brings for you have reminded me that “I am with you.”  Ahhhh!  Amen.

1 Peter 1:14

PRAYER

1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

PRAYER:

“Conform!”  It seems like that’s all I hear, Lord, when I turn on the TV, ponder the worldview, or consider some of my inner thoughts.  “Conform! It’s okay…It will feel good…You need to do this for yourself for once…It’s not a big deal…”  Yet, as much as I’m tempted to conform, and as much as I admit there are many times I have conformed, I no longer need to live in this way because you have called me to be holy.  It’s not that I’ll ever be holy by myself, it’s because through Jesus Christ you give me his holiness, and you send me your Holy Spirit to empower me to conform to your ways and no one else’s.  So as I’m tempted to conform today, I look forward to relying on you today to help me live as you have created me to live.  Amen.

Romans 7:18-19

PRAYER

Romans 7:18-19 For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.

PRAYER:

O Lord, thank you for your extreme patience and eternal love.  So often I feel the struggle these words express – I do what I don’t want to do and I keep doing the things I wish that I wouldn’t.  It’s frustrating and disappointing.  Even more it leaves me feeling defeated, lamenting: “What a wretched man I am!  Who will rescue me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24).  BUT “Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:25).  I am not defeated but victorious.  His victory is mine for I’ve been forgiven, redeemed, and rescued!  You continue to apply this true to me day after day after day demonstrating your love and patience to me.  So help me remember that truth today that it empowers me to win the struggles I face.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Malachi 4:2

PRAYER

Malachi 4:2  But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.

PRAYER:

Dear Jesus, Sun of righteousness, the bright rays of glory on that first Easter Sunday gave a renewed vigor and a fresh start to your followers, especially Peter.  As you know, it can be quite a challenge sometimes, both physically and mentally, to get out of bed and tackle the day’s tasks.  All the more important it is, then, for me to feel your bone-penetrating rays of forgiveness and to receive your muscle-energizing promises of strength and power.  With your spiritual healing in my wings I intend to honor you today with my thoughts and my actions—grant me this strength!  Shine, Jesus, shine, in this heart of mine!  Amen.

Romans 6:3-4

PRAYER

Romans 6:3-4 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?  We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

PRAYER:

As I look into the mirror of these words, Heavenly Father, I am soothed by what I see.  It’s not what I expected.  Instead of seeing the ugly blotches of my sin and the deep scars of my guilt, I see Jesus. In an instant I see myself taking my last breath on the cross with Jesus and then walking with him away from the tomb.  In thanksgiving I now strive to become more like him.  Connected to him through your Word I ask for strength to be kind today.  Help me lend a helping hand to others without expecting anything in return.  Baptized into your name most holy, may my reputation reflect your love.  In your precious Name I pray. Amen.

Luke 24:5

PRAYER

Luke 24:5 “Why do you look for the living among the dead?”

PRAYER:

O Risen Savior, these women came in search of something. They found nothing. But in finding nothing, they found more than something. They found that by your resurrection you proved “It is finished,” that all sins have been forgiven. By your resurrection you proved your power over death so that on the last day you will take all believers to be with you in heaven. By your resurrection you proved your power over the devil so that I have your counsel and strength to resist the powers of the devil. You are not dead, you are alive! Help me live for you. In your name I pray. Amen.

Matthew 28:8

PRAYER

Matthew 28:8 So the women hurried away from the tomb…filled with joy.

PRAYER:

O Risen Savior, these women didn’t approach the tomb in this way.  Yet their sad and sorrow-filled hearts turned to joy because of your resurrection. It changes everything for us. By your resurrection you changed our status before God from GUILTY to NOT GUILTY. You hijacked us from the road to destruction changing our eternal destination from hell to heaven. You changed our fear from a paralyzing fear like the soldiers, to a fear that loves and trusts in you above all things. Thank you for changing everything for me. May the joy this brings to my heart overflow into my life. Amen.

John 19:30

PRAYER

John 19:30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

PRAYER:

Lord, draw me back to your cross again and again.  Reassure me that I am forgiven by your complete and perfect sacrifice for the sins of the whole world, including my sin.  When I am troubled by my sins and doubt, let me hear your words “It is finished.”  Often I want to do something to earn your love and forgiveness.  Teach me, Lord, that I cannot earn the gift you have completed with your suffering on Calvary.  Then fill me with gratitude and thanks for your gift of grace.  Grant me strength so that my life of service and obedience reflects my love for you!  Amen.

Matthew 27:39-40

PRAYER

Matthew 27:39-40  Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”

PRAYER:

Jesus, King of heaven, I praise and thank you for your suffering and death on Calvary.  You loved me enough to stay on the cross and complete your work of salvation.  When the world mocks me and taunts me because I am your disciple, strengthen my convictions so that I may remain faithful to you.  Keep my eyes fixed on your cross and the forgiveness and life it brings.  Amen.

Proverbs 16:23-24

PRAYER

Proverbs 16:23-24 A wise man’s heart guides his mouth, and his lips promote instruction. Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, when I associate ‘pleasant’ and ‘sweet’ with words, I hear you whispering promises in my heart.  I hear Jesus praying from the cross, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing.”  I hear your Son confirm the repentant, believing thief who hung next to him, “Today, you will be with me in paradise.”  May my lips speak tenderly to the people around me today so that your gentleness and your care will be transmitted through me.  In order for this to happen, I need you to touch my heart with forgiveness and fill me with your Spirit so that Jesus governs and guides more of my thoughts and my words day after day.  Thank you!  Amen.

Matthew 26:48-50

PRAYER

Matthew 26:48-50 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.  Jesus replied, “Friend, do what you came for.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.

PRAYER:

You, Lord Jesus, willingly submitted to arrest in the darkness of Gethsemane.  Even during one of the darkest moments in your life, you reached out to your friend out of love and concern.  All too often I am lulled into the shadows of sin, Lord.  I fail to understand the depth of your suffering, the darkness of the sin within me, and the riches of your unconditional love.  Rouse me to confess my sins and shower me with your forgiveness.  Shine your love on my path that I might follow you all the way to heaven.  Don’t let me scurry off into the darkness and be lost forever. Reach out your hand and save.  Thank you for your patience and love! Amen.

Luke 22:4-6

PRAYER

Luke 22:4-6  And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus.  They were delighted and agreed to give him money.  He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

PRAYER:

Again and again I hear the temptations of this world.  From every side I hear the world, Satan, and my own sinful flesh telling me that values in life are measured by the amount of money I have, the car I drive, or the size or style of the home in which I live.  Lord Jesus, help me treasure you as the only enduring blessing.  Guard my heart from greed and the love of money.  Keep this darkness at bay so that your life may continue to shine in my heart and that my life may reflect your love. Amen.

Colossians 3:12

PRAYER

Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

PRAYER:

O Father in heaven, what should I wear today? I have the choice of clothing myself with compassion or callousness, kindness or harshness, humility or arrogance, gentleness or anger, patience or impatience. As I decide what I will wear, remind me that I have been chosen by you. Through faith you have clothed in Christ’s love forgiving my sins, forgiving me for the dirty laundry I have worn. Change my heart and attitude so that your limitless love may empower me each day to clothe myself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Mark 11:9

PRAYER

Mark 11:9 Hosanna!  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

PRAYER:

Dear Jesus, you are the ultimate King, knowing all things, powerful and mighty, humble and loving, victorious in battle against sin, death, and the devil.  You desire to be King of my heart and King of my life so that I hear your voice and follow you, that I listen to your promises and trust in them.  I am ashamed to admit that as much as I understand and want you to be King of my heart and life, too often you’re not.  Too often I listen to my own voice and reason.  Forgive me.  And as you assure me that you have forgiven me, you again remind me why I have every reason to keep you as the King of my heart and life, for you know me; you love me; you care for me; you will always do what’s best for me.  So Lord Jesus, with your help when I’m tempted to be my own king, help me keep you as King of my heart and my life.  Amen.

Galatians 5:22

PRAYER

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is…patience.

PRAYER:

O Lord, as my stress level increases, my patience wears thin and it doesn’t take much for me to snap at others. I want to blame them or the stressful situations in my life, but I must confess that my lack of patience is evidence of the weaknesses of my own faith. My impatience shows a lack of trust and confidence in you. Thankfully, Lord, you are patience with me. Despite the “stress” I cause you with my sins you patiently forgive me. So, when I feel my patience wearing thin, lead me to take a deep breath as I place my stress on you (I Pet. 5:7) and remember your patience with me. Amen.

Daniel 4:37

PRAYER

Daniel 4:37 And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

PRAYER:

Of all people to say these words, O Lord, Nebuchadnezzar could speak them from experience (Daniel 4). He knew what it was to be humbled. Humble me when I’m proud, when I think of myself more highly than I ought, when my sinful pride rears its ugly head in my words and actions. As you humble me, may it not lead to further pride as I try to deny my sin. Rather may it lead me to turn to Christ’s cross. There He displayed the greatest act of humility: God himself dying for sinful man. Why? To forgive me for my sinful pride and give me eternal life! May His humility inspire me to serve you and others with great humility. Amen.

Daniel 9:20

PRAYER

Daniel 9:20 While I was…confessing my sin

PRAYER:

O Lord, lead me in each day to examine my thoughts, words, and actions. As I do, I see they fail to measure up to your standard of excellence (perfection). Therefore, humble me before you so that I don’t try to deny them or justify them, but rather that I confess them to you. As I confess my sins give me confidence that they are forgiven because of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Living with that confidence, lead me each day to honestly confess my sins before you. For in doing so you keep me grounded, you keep me humble, you keep me relying on you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Psalm 1:1-3

PRAYER

Psalm 1:1-3 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

PRAYER:

O Lord, your Word is powerful.  You said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.  Your Word gives wisdom (see Proverbs).  Your Word nurtures my faith (Ps. 1:1-3).  So why do I sometimes treat your Word like it’s just another book…like it isn’t all that beneficial for me in my daily life…like I can get by without hearing it and reading it?  You know why, and so do I.  Forgive me.  Renew my commitment to spend time in your Word regularly.  Strengthen my resolve that I don’t let life’s distractions deter me from this commitment.   As I study your Word, may I do so with joy as you grant me wisdom, power, and might that I need from you and only you can give.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Proverbs 2:6

PRAYER

Proverbs 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” (Rom. 11:33) Your wisdom far surpasses mine or any human for that matter. So why do I listen to my reason instead of yours? Why does my sinful pride say, “I’m the exception to the rule? This time, Lord, you need to listen to me. This time I know better.” How foolish! How ignorant! Forgive me. Lead me always to seek your wisdom. And as I face decisions and dilemmas, give me clear direction so that I heed your will. When I do head in the wrong direction, quickly change my course to get me on the right track. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Luke 9:51

PRAYER

Luke 9:51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

PRAYER:

No one has ever experienced anything like it, LORD! Most need to read the story over a couple of times. Myself? I have my moments when nothing will stop me from doing what it is I want to accomplish. But I also have moments when I’m easily deterred or distracted from my goals. Yet with you, nothing would or could stop you. As Paul mentioned…nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Romans 8). What wondrous love, Jesus! With me in mind, you allowed yourself to be killed in order to accept the punishment I deserve. Your love never stops flowing! Your cup of forgiveness runs over! Empower me to be resolute in my quest to follow your will and to share your love with everyone in my life. My faith clings to you, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Colossians 3:23-24

PRAYER

Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord and not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, is my heart always in it?  You really know the answer to the question better than I.  What I mean is that as I go about my day, there are some things that seem so routine and normal – like making my bed, cleaning up the kitchen, taking the kids to school, sitting in school or at work…  When I fail to see the purpose behind them, they can easily become a burden for me.  They shouldn’t, though, so forgive me when they do.  For even the seemingly mundane tasks of today are anything but meaningless.  Rather, they’re ways that I’m serving you, the One who came to serve me and give his life as a ransom for me that I might receive an inheritance in heaven.  Mindful of this awesome truth, today I am looking forward to serving you with all my heart, even in the small things I do.  Amen.
